YANKEES DISMANTLE OAKLAND BEHIND PFIESTER 12‑K GEM

The Yankees tightened their grip on the standings Tuesday night, dispatching Oakland 6–3 in a game that felt firmly in New York’s hands from the opening frame. Left‑hander Jack Pfiester remained perfect on the season, moving to 7–0 with a dominant eight‑inning performance featuring 12 strikeouts and just six hits allowed. New York’s offense backed him early and often. Luke Appling and Joe Judge each crossed the plate twice, while Mickey Mantle doubled twice and drove in a pair to ignite the crowd of 33,322. Jack Fournier, Walt Dropo, and Ernie Lombardi each added RBI knocks as the Yankees piled up 13 hits against a beleaguered A’s staff. Oakland scratched out runs behind Larry Doby and Johnny Hodapp, but every rally fizzled under Pfiester’s steady hand. By the time the bullpen stitched together the final three outs, the outcome was long settled.

The Pirates gave the home crowd of 38,310 a crisp, satisfying shutout Tuesday night, blanking Kansas City 5–0 behind a complete‑game gem from Jim Bagby. The right‑hander was in full command, scattering six hits and striking out seven while facing just 34 batters. Pittsburgh did its damage early and decisively. Gil Hodges supplied the thunder, belting two home runs and driving in three. Sam West added a solo shot of his own, part of a tidy two‑RBI night. Kansas City never mounted much of a threat. Dan Brouthers collected two hits, but the Royals’ lineup spent most of the evening beating Bagby’s sinker into the dirt. Bobby Shantz endured a rough outing, tagged for eight hits and five runs in just three innings before giving way to Barney Pelty, who steadied things but far too late. On a cool 57‑degree night with the wind blowing out to left, it was the Pirates who supplied all the lift. A pair of double plays, a pair of long balls, and one pitcher in total control — a tidy formula for a shutout win.
