Just a Little English

Woody English, one of the Pirates rookies, made an lasting impression on the Mets, who have now lost four straight games. Woody made sure the Mets dive continued with the slapping of two triples off the ailing Mets pitching. He provided two runs of the eight the Pirates scored. Once again, Coveleski never made it out of the 2nd inning. Oh Stan, have you become a "has-been"? Ron Kline, rookie pitcher for the Mets, filled in and lasted seven innings but took it up the nose with three homeruns. Bobby Doerr, Lou Gehrig and Gil Hodges baptized the rookie with solo bombs to the upset Met fans. The balls were thrown back on the field while booing their beloved team.

The O's got their 3rd homerun out of Mays in a one run losing effort at home. Rube Marquard struck out five in five, but the hits were too much for him to handle and was removed from the game with three earned runs. Al Simmons was the antagonist in this game. Four hits with an RBI was enough to get under the skin of Marquard. In the end, it wasn't Simmons who sealed the deal but Bill Dickey with a two run homreun in the 8th inning to give the Sox the lead. The O's made a 9th inning effort with a run off Klippstein. A mound visit later, Klippstein got his head on straight and finished out the game for his 3rd save.
